From Earth Magic: Francis Hitching, Penguin, first published in 1976 (P176)
The results of an anthropological survey published in 1901 summarised the religious and magical beliefs of recently ‘discovered’ tribes.
1: “The thought that all nature shares a common life, and that all things – rocks, stones, plants and trees, birds and beasts and men- are interchangeable one with the other, under certain conditions.”
2: “ The earth, sea and sky were inhabited by myriads of spirits, who animate each separate object.”
3: “ The spirit world transcends man, and can be good or bad.”
